1911 dreams

The 1911-style pistol.

It’s something I don’t have, but something I want.

Yesterday my interest was renewed yet again due to that race gun. I spent some time last night drooling over the STI website trying to figure out what model I’d want someday.

Then this morning I read about new guns from STI.

And about Ruger making a 1911.

And Taurus debuting a 9mm 1911.

Just a day for 1911’s.

The fact I’ve got a bunch of .45 ACP bullets and brass and other .45 ACP-related reloading gear, but no .45 ACP gun in which to use it… gosh Honey, I really need to give them a home. 🙂

  1. 3 STI’s,1 SV, 2 Kimber, 1 Springfield, 1 Colt….

I have no idea what foo.c is talking about.

BTW were you able to field strip and look a the rails/frame of the gun? Be interested to see if there are any signs of cracking in the normal spots.

  2. Two words: Taurus SUCKS.

Springfield, Colt, STI, Para Ordnance. These should be the top of your shopping list. Taurus is a pile of junk, piece of crap, pile of flaming dog turds. I’d rather have a pointed stick in a gunfight than a Taurus, at least I’d know the stick would be reliable.

~Ahem~ Can you tell my opinion on Taurus firearms? Their QC sucks, their CS sucks, and their repair service SUCKS. Lifetime Warranty? You bet! You’ll need it AT LEAST once and it will take a LIFETIME to warranty the product! I’ve had Taurus guns out for repair for in excess of 8 months now. I’ve had more angry and rude phone calls with their CS and Service departments than should be allowable by law. I once suggested to an extremely rude CS rep that he should take his own product and try it out, on himself. Of course, there is nothing to fear, the damn thing probably wouldn’t work anyways.

PS: Sorry to rant and rave in your comments section. I have very few firmly held and tried and true beliefs. The first is Rule 1, THE GUN IS ALWAYS LOADED. The second is Rob’s Rule 1 of gun buying, TAURUS SUCKS!

    • I’m not sure I follow you. Could you be a little clearer? 🙂

When it came to looking at 1911’s I was going to look at Springfield and STI mainly. Kimber is a consideration but I’ve heard mixed things (e.g. the II’s aren’t that great but the first gen are if you can find them). Para I’ve heard mixed reviews on as well, mostly positive but enough stuff to give me pause. I was also going to consider Rock Island Armory as they seem to be well regarded for their pricepoint. I want my first 1911 to be a good one… not bottom of the barrel but also not top of the line. I want something that’s good that will shoot well out of the box and not be a bad experience or require a lot of smithing just to work well. But I expect it won’t be my first 1911 and thus I don’t want to really spend tons of money on my first… let it be my learning platform too.

  3. My top choices for guns not “top of the line” but not “bottom of the barrel” Are the STI Spartan and the Springfield Armory Mil-Spec (not GI, the true Mil-Spec with decent sights). Everything else in the <$650 range is suspect to me. The Loaded series of Springfields are sometimes in that range, but not always.

The Spartan is an Armscor (Rock Island Armory) slide, frame, and barrel, that is partially fitted in the Philippines and then finished here in Georgetown. They are nicely built guns and I DO like Armscor products. I had an RIA GI Spec gun for a long time that ran like a Singer sewing machine.

I've always been a 1911 guy and I will get another. I look forward to this supposed Ruger gun. Lots of people talk trash because they've had some recalls, but all of my experiences with Ruger products and service have been top notch. I've had a P95 for about a decade now, 15,000+ rounds (I stopped counting at 12k), and the only problem came from worn out springs. I called Ruger, they sent me parts and instructions, free, a day later. Three days later my gun is back to running like a champ. I've had a GP100 for a long time too, it went to Thunder Ranch and ran like a Swiss-built brick outhouse, you just couldn't stop that thing. I'm convinced you could throw it into a pit of lava, pull it back out and keep shooting.

    • I’ve heard lots of good things about the SAI Mil-Spec and the STI Spartan. I knew the Spartan was made mostly out of house but I didn’t know it was a Armscor. Interesting.

I think people are still sore at Ruger for their history. Understandable. But it does seem Ruger is really trying to turn themselves around, and they’re getting pretty aggressive in improving their product line. Look at the LCP, LCR, the SSR-556, and so on. I have to give Ruger credit for how they’re running their business… they don’t seem to be resting on their laurels.

  4. I don’t know if it is understandable.

Is it reasonable to be mad at a public company with share holders and a board of directors, for something said by a past leader? That would be like saying you wouldn’t buy a Ford, because Henry Ford was an anti-semitic. It would be different if both Bill Ruger and Henry Ford were alive, but both are dead and clearly both companies are moving away from their founder’s dead (pardon the pun) ideas and embracing market concepts that allow them to compete.

Personally, I think Bill Ruger was an asshole, but every time I load a 15 round magazine into my P95 I smile, at the thought of ‘ole Bill rolling over in his grave.

    • It’s understandable because I grant that not everyone in this world is like me… that some people hold grudges, even if I think it may be irrational to do so.

If you really want Bill to roll over, buy an SR-556 and load up those 30 round PMAGs. 😉
