Loudwire came up with a list of the top 10 thrash bands of all time. Like all “top X lists” it’s some fact and a lot of opinion. Still, I thought it’d make for a good Sunday Metal theme.
While I might debate the other bands on this list, their existence on the list, their placing on the list, you know the top 4 are going to be “the big 4”. And frankly, I cannot debate the ordering here… at least, the ordering relative to each other.
#4 Anthrax
Often forgotten, their first album “Fistful of Metal”. Arguably one of their better albums.

#5 Exodus
“Verbal Razors”. This song always cracked me up.

#6 Testament
Y’all know my love for Testament. “Over the Wall”

#7 Kreator
My exposure to Kreator came later, with “Coma of Souls”. Ah, to be working in (metal) radio again.

#8 Death Angel
I never really got into Death Angel, but I did appreciate they were different. “A Room with a View”

#9 Exciter
“Violence & Force”. I think my first exposure to this album was on a P.M.R.C. “Rising to the Challenge” video. Thanx for the tip, Tipper!

#10 Overkill
“Wrecking Crew”, live @ L’amour, 1987
Here’s a classic of the 1980’s, because it combined the best in “underground” metal and this new thing called video cassettes.
Truly awesome to see Exodus, Slayer, and Venom together. Hrm. I wonder if there’d be any market in those bands doing “reunion” package tour?
The backstage stuff was what made the video, the Venom and Slayer interviews.
And who can forget stage banter? “This ain’t about no goldfish… this ain’t about no tuna fish… and it ain’t about no trout! This song’s called ‘Piranha’!”
Was my first exposure to Venom. “Can we say foook?” I thought Cronos was hilarious.
Seeing Kerry King with hair. Jeff, R.I.P..
Ah, the early days of thrash metal.
When I write up the Sunday Metal posts, frequently I choose themes or take inspiration from somewhere. For a while I’ve thought about having some guest postings, and that starts now.
The next some posts will be from my close friend, W. He’s flown the flag of metal for many years, including being a metal radio DJ around the same time I was (tho we didn’t meet until after). We’ve been friends for many years, been to numerous shows together, and share a love of the music. So I figured he’d make a good first guest to Sunday Metal. So with that, onwards!
