Sunday Metal – AC/DC

The Young Brothers. What would rock and heavy metal be if not for them?

“Let There Be Rock”. Listen to that opening guitar… just a dirty, driving guitar riff.

Under “rock anthem”, this song is listed:

And my favorite AC/DC song, “Walk All Over You”

Sunday Metal – Overkill’s Ironbound

I know. I probably sound like a shill for the new Overkill album, Ironbound, but I’m just really loving the album! Since buying it on its US release date it’s about the only thing I’ve been listening to.

Here’s the video for the first release off the album, “Bring Me the Night”

A great choice for a first release. It’s a strong album end to end. Thrashier numbers like “Bring Me the Night”, “Ironbound”, “The Green and Black”. Then you’ll have more mid-tempo songs like “The Head and Heart”, which just has a great structure to it. Really, I think it’s a strong album end to end.

BTW, iTunes Music Store eventually got back to me. They refunded my purchase (sigh) and are going to investigate the sound quality issue… try back in a few weeks. Ugh.

Damn you, iTunes

Overkill‘s new album, Ironbound, is now out in the US.

Yesterday I visit the iTunes Music Store to buy it. Purchase. Download. Listen…. hey this is good. What’s that noise? Popping? crackling? static? WTF? let’s try the next track? It’s worse! next track? more of the same. Crap!  Every track has some sort of noise on it! That’s a let-down, but unacceptable.

Use the in-app “report a problem” on those tracks. This morning I receive an email that the order is still in process and my report has been flagged for a later follow-up, which could be 3 more days until it happens.

*sigh*

I don’t want a refund, I want tracks that are crystal clear.

Oh well. Meantime I’ve still listened to the album and tried to ignore the noise. The album is good. I’m liking it. “Ironbound” is good. “Bring Me the Night”. “The Goal Is Your Soul” is cool. Really, I’m digging the whole album. Hopefully iTMS will properly fix things.

Sunday Metal – Judgment Night

Judgment Night” was a so-so movie back in 1993. What made the movie stand out was the soundtrack album. If I remember correctly, they took rap groups and heavy metal or alternative bands and paired them together and had each pairing compose an original song for the soundtrack. It turned out some great cuts.

Whatever you think of nü-metal or latter-day rap-metal, (good) rap and metal actually do have a lot in common and can mix quite well.

Biohazard and Onyx’s duet on “Judgment Night”. One of my favorites from the album.

Faith No More and Boo-Ya-Tribe, with “Another Body Murdered”. Another favorite.

Slayer and Ice-T. A bit weak of a song, but I like the pairing of Ice-T and Slayer. Tom’s “WAR!” cries are signature Tom. When the song picks up at 2:23, it throws back to Slayer’s early punk influences. And when it really kicks in at 3:57, signature Slayer sound.

I remember one night during my college radio show playing “Just Another Victim” by Helmet & House of Pain. A couple of the other station DJ’s that did the rap shows had come into the studio to get something about the time Everlast started rapping. I recall how surprised they were to hear a rap artist on “the metal guy’s” radio show. Take that for whatever it’s worth.

I am there

Megadeth. Testament. Exodus.

On tour together during March 2010.

They will be in Austin.

I will be there.

Megadeth is headlining. 20th anniversary of “Rust In Peace” and they’ll be playing the whole album. Awesome. I must admit to not being the biggest Megadeth fan because far too often when Dave Mustaine opens his mouth it just makes me want to smack him… either because he’s saying something stupid or because his “singing” voice is rather whiney. Nevertheless, Megadeth’s place in metal history cannot be denied, they’ve got a lot of great songs, and I actually look forward to the show. “Rust In Peace” is a fantastic album. In fact, the new album, “United Abominations” is really good; that new guitarist is amazing.

I’d say if there was any band on the bill that I truly wanted to see, it’s Testament. I’ve seen then a couple times in recent years and they’ve been solid. I think I’ve become a bigger Testament fan these days than I ever have been before (since the “Practice” days). Just solid and bone-crushing thrash.

Exodus. Meh. I mean, I love “Fabulous Disaster” and some of their other stuff. No question they put out some good heavy thrash. But I’ve just never been into them. Don’t hate ’em, don’t love ’em, just indifferent. But I still expect they’ll crush for the 30 minutes or so they are on stage.

Should be on hell of a show. Why don’t you have your ticket yet?

The Scorpions to retire

So, The Scorpions are going to retire.

Finish this album, world tour, then close the doors for good.

Hopefully this won’t be a “retirement” like KISS’s retirement… the farewell that just won’t quit. I suspect it won’t. Word basically is they’re getting old, they acknowledge that fact, and there comes a time when you need to stop.

There’s Aerosmith. I know they don’t want to pack it in, nor go out on a low note like they’re currently in. But geez.

Another such band is Slayer. They’ve been toying with retirement rumors because they admit, old guys up on stage playing their sort of music doesn’t make a lot of sense.

So to The Scorpions. They acknowledge reality, they’ll go out on top and with a bang. I applaud you for doing it right.
