Couple random things

Oh, before I go… couple random things.

1. Feeling a lot better. I think whatever I had is now gone… but last night I felt really bad. My guess tho? The cigar and glass of wine did it… body just wasn’t quite ready for that yet. 🙂   But I’m on the mend, almost 100%. Thank you for the well wishes.

2. Daughter did something cool.

My father-in-law has a deer lease (natch) and the first couple weeks of January there’s a special youth season. He invited Daughter out to come take a doe or a spike during that time. I spoke with Daughter about it and she declined. Why? because she doesn’t feel her marksmanship skills are quite there. She would rather pass on the opportunity than recklessly take it. I am mighty proud of her. I know  she’s got the ability to put a rifle round within an 8″ circle at 100 yards, but she’s not sure of her ability to do it on demand especially given the excitement and pressure of “the moment.” I respect her thinking here; she wants to do the right thing and would rather wait than rush into it and do things wrong.

So it just means more range time. No arguments there!

Make me think… maybe time to buy a second Ruger 10/22 and do an Appleseed with the kids. I’ve been wanting to do that for some time. Hrm.

  1. misbeHaven says way cool! She would rather pass on a shot and a trophy or good meat shot if she isn’t absolutely sure of the shot and that the deer is going to DRT.

    • No. Have you? If so, please feel free to share all the information you wish to share.

It’s one of those things I’ve heard a lot about, I hear a lot of good things about, and it goes on and off my radar. I can’t see it being a bad thing. But after posting the above and then checking the Appleseed website again well…. I’m not sure how well the kiddo would make it through the weekend. Might be the sort of thing for ME to take alone first, gauge it, then go back a second time and take kiddo along. If you’ve got an opinion on that angle, please share.

      • I have been planning to attend one for some time now but have not gotten around to it. I don;t know anyone who has attended one either but then again most the people I shoot with are pretty much pistol only guys. If you plan on going let me know and I will join you.

        • Will do! And of course, if you get off your butt sooner than I do in terms of organizing a trip out there, let me know!

The more I think about it, the more I think that yeah, I should probably do it once myself and gauge it. My kids can be pretty tough, but there’s still no question this is a LONG weekend and they’re still kids.

          • It looks very kid friendly from the site but who knows. The next one close by is “Fredericksburg, TX – Mar 26-27”.

          • Regarding the kids, I’ll just need to talk with some people and figure it out.

As for when to go… I just have to figure out things with it, like getting the rifle outfit, coordinating with work and so on.

Just keep bugging me. I really do want to do it, and March would probably be a reasonable time weather-wise. Plus Fredericksburg… lots of good German food. 🙂

    • I’ve wanted to deck out a 10/22 in the Appleseed way (e.g. TechSights and all), and I also thought it might be fun to have a second 10/22. So who knows. 🙂 Thanx for the offer. I’ll see how it goes. All depends what I want to do in the end.

      • I have a 10/22 with an aftermarket trigger, extended mag release, auto bolt release plate, and a 4x Leupold scope. I think I would just use my AR if one of the little ones wants to use that.

        • Ooo… decked out. 🙂

My present 10/22 is pretty much stock save for a 4x scope on it. Good enough to get around. The one mod I’ve wanted to do was one to “fix” the bolt release. I think the bolt-stop latch is the most frustrating thing about working with a 10/22.

Thanx for the offer. I’ll see how it all will go. I need to put Appleseed out of my head for a bit cause I need to get back into work mode right now. Appleseed will involve a bunch of dreaming, planning, and thinking, and I’ve already got a bunch of other rifle-related things I want to poke at while on my Christmas vacation. 🙂
