LCP 1, Coyote 0

My Governor, Rick Perry, dispatched a coyote with his Ruger LCP. Apparently it was the coyote or Perry and his puppy.

So, .380 may be marginal for self-defense, but seems adequate for coyotes. 🙂

Amusing from the article:

Perry said he carries his .380 Ruger pistol — loaded with hollow-point bullets — when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes. He’d also seen coyotes in the area.

We must emphasize the use of those evil hollow-point bullets!!  Of course, amongst gunnies the debate is that with a .380 you may actually be better off using FMJ in order to get adequate penetration.

And honestly, for snakes? I mean, I understand and all, but a .380 against a snake? I’d rather use proper snake-loads for that.

But there’s no question folks. As we humans continue to develop land, the critters on that land won’t go away. Plus as “green friendly” as Austin is, there’s lots of undeveloped land. That land is prime spots for critters to live. While I’m in the city, I back up to a greenbelt that connects to hundreds of acres of land that will never be developed. I get deer, I’ve heard the coyotes (one neighbor has seen them), there’ve been rattlesnakes in my yard, and there’s the suspected bobcat.

“I holler, and the coyote stopped. I holler again. By this time I had taken my weapon out and charged it. It is now staring dead at me. Either me or the dog are in imminent danger. I did the appropriate thing and sent it to where coyotes go,” [Gov. Perry] said.

Perry said the laser pointer helped make it a quick, clean kill.

I can see that. It’s not like you can aim that LCP that easily, so in case like this the laser had to be most helpful. I do wonder how long the shot was.

“It was not in a lot of pain,” he said. “It pretty much went down at that particular juncture.”

DRT. It’s nice to have a Gov. that knows how to shoot. 🙂

Texas law allows people to shoot coyotes if they are threatening livestock or domestic animals. The coyote never reached the dog, which was unharmed, Perry said.

Perry’s security detail was not required to file a report on the governor discharging a weapon, Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange said.

“People shoot coyotes all the time, snakes all the time,” Mange said. “We don’t write reports.”

It’s good to see that time and money isn’t wasted. 🙂

Pear Pimples for Hairy Fishnuts

Bloom County was my favorite comic strip. I still love going back and reading the collections I have, and would love to get the new “Complete Collection” series that’s coming out.

One thing that pains me about the strip? My kids can’t enjoy it, at least not like I did. Bloom County was such a reflection of the time in which it was created (which was part of what made it so great), that unless you lived through it or are a student of 1980’s history, you just won’t understand many of the jokes. I will say my kids enjoy Berkeley Breathed‘s books and his sense of humor.

So lacking Bloom County, my kids can enjoy Pearls Before Swine, which is awesome.

Just Smurfy

Going to the bank today to open an account (more on this eventually).

Wife and I had a little verbal exchange as I was going out the door.

The end result?

I’m now “Glock Smurf”.

That’s the Smurf I want to be.

Glock Smurf.

😉

George Carlin on Earth Day

Peter reminded me about this clip of George Carlin talking about Earth Day.

I’ve felt the same way. We’re not saving the Earth, the Earth is fine. It’s been here for billions of years and it will keep on kicking for billions more. But we little arrogant pimples on the face of the Earth? We’re the problem, and we’re what’s at risk of going away. We’re not saving the Earth, we’re saving our own irresponsible butts.

Here’s a useful bit of information folks: eventually, we all go away. May not be what you want, but life isn’t fair, it won’t ever be fair no matter how much you whine and try, and you won’t always get what you want. Eventually you come to terms with the cold hard fact that Mother Nature prefers balance; she will always self-correct things (even if it takes a million years, because she’s got the time and patience); and while you might win some insignificant battle here and there, she will always win the war.

Does this mean to give up and not try? I think it means one should consider their actions. When I first became a homeowner I channeled my inner Hank Hill and wanted the best looking lawn on the block. Then Mother Nature had the final say, because the Central Texas summer sun just doesn’t like grass, not at least without a lot of water, which 1. gets costly, 2. takes water away from more important things, like me drinking it. Over time I found balance between keeping a fair lawn and knowing how Mother Nature liked to be.

You can spend your whole life paddling upstream, fighting the current. What do you get for it? How much progress do you make? Instead, go with the flow. It makes for a more enjoyable journey. Sure, sometimes you’ll have to paddle to avoid some rocks or maybe get over to where the stream branches because that way looks more interesting. But in the end you can fight it or roll with it, and most times learning to go with the flow really yields more satisfying results.

Happy Earth Day

Go hug a tree or something.

Me? I shall probably celebrate by dining on an animal I harvested myself… deer, hog, or more likely, sampling that water buffalo. Talk about your free-range organic meat.

BBQ Not Found

A few days ago I was in a business that had lots of old vehicle license plates decorating the walls. Some were just plain plates, others were vanity plates. One in particular caught my eye. Given it’s age (well before the Internet) I have to assume it the combination of letters and numbers was coincidence. I forgot to get a picture, but I can’t forget what the plate said:

BBQ 404

All I could think to myself was “BBQ not found? How sad.” 🙂

How To Train Your Dragon

I’m not really high on Dreamworks’ “animated children’s movies” because well… they’ve sucked and have a pretty poor track record.

My rule is simple. When you see the commercials/trailers for the movie, are they pitching the movie and the story? or do they work on promoting the “star power” of the “voice actors”? Pixar? They don’t advertise that so-and-so does the voices, even if they’re not really good voice actors and are just doing their normal voices. Pixar knows story is king, and that shows in their movies.

But with Dragons, Dreamworks well…. now that I see WHO the people are that did the voices well, it’s not like it was massive star power there anyways. But that’s just fine! There was less focus on the glitz and more focus on making a good movie.

And good it was.

Sure it was a story you’ve heard/seen a thousand times. There’s really nothing new to the base story. It’s the telling that changes, and I think they told a good story. I found the movie most enjoyable. Comedy, action, suspense, just a hint of innocent romance, some emotional heart-tugging moments. Sure you know how things are going to go (tho I thought the end um…. thing that happened to Hiccup at the end of the movie, that was a cute touch), sure you know “happily ever after”. But still, I enjoyed myself.

Daughter approves as well.

Oldest and Youngest… well… fisticuffs in the morning meant no movie for them in the afternoon. *sigh*

Anyway, an enjoyable movie. I’m sure it means a “Dragson 2” is already brewing… not sure it should be done… sometimes I think it’s good to just let good things stay as they are, we don’t need to milk it to death. But you know how it is… there’s money to be made and ideas to run into the ground. 🙂
