True Nutrition Whey Flavor #10 – Coconut Cream Pie

I bought the TrueNutrition.com 38 Flavor sample pack.

Coconut Cream Pie

I’m not really sure if there was much difference between this and the Coconut Cream, tho something wants to say this was a bit sweeter. But I’m not sure if that’s due to 1. it really is sweeter, 2. I had it in milk, 3. my brain wants it to be sweeter because of the word “pie”.

But like all the coconut flavors so far, the taste isn’t bad, but just not 100% to my palate.

Oh another thing…. all these flavors are whey isolate. I haven’t noticed any gastric issues. Whey concentrate, or any whey that requires more breakdown, generates well… more farts than one might care for. I haven’t noticed any of that yet with this whey isolate. But also note that sometimes when I mix with milk I’m mixing it with HEB Mootopia (Wife drinks this, it’s a “lactose free” milk; tho I usually drink the same as the Kiddos using whole milk), and that I also eat a lot of greek yogurt. So, it’s possible this has contributed something to my gut that is aiding in digestion. Hard to say, but I just know way way back in the day when I drank “all the whey” which I think was just whey concentrate, oh my… it was horrible. 🙂

My point in mentioning it is that the Optimum 100% Gold whey is a combination of concentrate and isolates and such, but also digestive enzymes. If I can buy pure isolate from True Nutrition and it costs the same? Fine. I don’t care about speed of digestion and other crap like that… taking whey after workouts and casein before bed for slow or anything like that. Meh. I just need to get a lot of protein in the day. Period.

True Nutrition Whey Flavor #9 – Coconut Cream

I bought the TrueNutrition.com 38 Flavor sample pack.

Coconut Cream

This too was and stayed white.

As soon as I pulled this out of the box, I was bummed. I knew I’d have to mix it with water, but I thought it’d taste better with milk. But alas, I was in a hurry and had to get moving, so I didn’t swap for something else. I ended up having it in water.

It wasn’t bad, but I bet it would have been a lot better in milk. The cream flavoring and the milk would have gone well together.

True Nutrition Whey Flavor #8 – Coconut

I bought the TrueNutrition.com 38 Flavor sample pack.

Coconut

I figured this would be white powder and stay white when mixed… but in the back of my head somewhere I secretly wondered if it was going to turn blue. Nope. White.

I was surprised by this flavor. When I pulled it out of the box, I had a “awww” reaction. I didn’t want it. I do like coconut, but all too often artificial coconut flavor is nasty to me. I was surprised by the strawberry coconut and especially the chocolate coconut in that they weren’t too bad. And this continued that trend. I was pleased at how good it did taste. It was more of a “dried/roasted” type of flavor than the sugary candy sweet you can get from a lot of coconut flavorings. I dug that. And that’s probably why, because I find while I like sugary artificial stuff to an extent, I can’t have it for long. It’s probably “candy” association in my head. We all know too much candy is bad for you, and while I love candy (have a bag of Swedish Fish and a bag of Jolly Ranchers at my office desk), I can only have it in moderation else my body revolts at the sugar overdose and lack of functional nutrition. So more “natural” or perhaps better to say “savory” flavors my body registers more as “good”. Thus this coconut registered a bit nicer for me since it didn’t taste like I was eating a Mounds bar. Tasted more like coconut bits you’d find in a trail mix, if you will.

I probably will still not have this as a regular thing, only because I can only take coconut in moderate amounts. But still, I found this was a nice and welcome flavor.

True Nutrition Whey Flavor #7 – Chocolate Coconut

I bought the TrueNutrition.com 38 Flavor sample pack.

Chocolate Coconut

Breaking the pink trend, and the magical color-changing powder… this powder had a brown color to it, and mixed in milk it looked brown. Like you’d expect of chocolate.

This had a stronger coconut flavor than the strawberry coconut, but not in a bad way, just more present. I actually liked this better than the strawberry coconut, probably because the chocolate tasted more natural (the strawberry tastes like artificial strawberry flavoring).

Still, it’s not my thing. The coconut just doesn’t resonate with me. Still, it was good and I found it generally agreeable.

True Nutrition Whey Flavor #6 – Strawberry Coconut

I bought the TrueNutrition.com 38 Flavor sample pack.

Strawberry Coconut

Turned pink… but coconut is white anyways so…. pink it is.

In the end… no. I mean, it tastes like you might think Strawberry NesQuik plus coconut would taste… maybe like a Mounds bar without any chocolate. That sort of sugary coconut sort of confectionary taste.

It’s not to my liking. I like coconut, but real coconut. Artificial is just to sweet-fake for me.

It’s not horrible, it’s not disgusting. Just not to my taste.

True Nutrition Whey Flavor #5 – Strawberry Banana

I bought the TrueNutrition.com 38 Flavor sample pack.

Strawberry Banana.

This one we guessed might be a sort of pink-yellow color, but no… just pink.

It tastes like strawberry banana… artificial, strawberry banana. It took a bit for me to find the right way to describe the banana flavor, but I think I know it: like a Banana “Now and Later”. That sort of really artificial banana flavor.

Not really my thing.

This wasn’t horrible by any stretch. In fact, I’ve been really happy that everything has tasted good so far. But it’s just a bit too artificial-flavored for me. Another one that I could probably have a few times, but there’d be no way I could stomach 10# of it.

True Nutrition Whey Flavor #4 – Wild Berry Blast

I bought the TrueNutrition.com 38 Flavor sample pack.

Wild Berry Blast.

We’ve started a little game. Before I mix up the next flavor, guess what color it will turn. For you see, in the little baggie it’s that off-white color of whey. But once liquid is added, so far they’ve all been turning colors. The 3 strawberry flavors I’ve already tried have all turned pink… as you’d guess from years of consuming artificially colored foods.

So now… Wild Berry Blast. We guessed blue or purple. And sure enough, that’s what it was. It was a light blue (greenish) sort of color.

The flavor? We thought about Crunch Berries cereal. Daughter has taken to taking sips and tasting along with me. We both thought the same thing.

This is probably a flavor that I could enjoy for a little while, but it would get old. Artificial-type flavors don’t always last with me. I can do them as one-offs, but trying to down a 10# bag of such flavors would be difficult. But again, that’s me. YMMV.

I also wondered what these were sweetened with. True Nutrition offers a lot of sweetening options, and I’m guessing some sort of artificial sweetener was used because 1. there’s aftertaste, 2. I’m wondering if the headache I’m getting is because this is the 3rd packet I’ve consumed today (spread over the course of the day). I understand why they do this, because carbs are the most evil to most whey consumers. But I’m thinking, depending what flavor I end up getting in bulk, about getting it unsweetened. First, if adding it to milk sweetens it enough, that’s fine. If I want something more, adding a little sugar is fine in my book. I’d rather have a pinch of sugar than HFCS or artificial sweeteners or other such crap.

So far, I still think the strawberries and cream is winning.

True Nutrition Whey Flavor #3 – Very Berry Strawberry

I bought the TrueNutrition.com 38 Flavor sample pack.

Very Berry Strawberry.

It’s well… strawberry, straight up. Where as the other strawberry-like flavors I’ve tried, strawberry cheesecake and strawberries and cream had other flavors to them, strawberry tastes just like strawberry. Well, not like real strawberries, but like any sort of familiar “artificial strawberry flavor” type of stuff. Like Strawberry NesQuik or the like.

It’s not bad, tho I had to drink it in water and I’m sure that degraded the flavor a bit, compared to drinking it in milk.

In terms of strawberry flavors so far, I think I like strawberries and cream the best because of that “cream” flavor… kinda smooths things out a bit, not as “sharp” a flavor (not that any of these are necessarily sharp). It’s all very subtle differences between the three flavors, but there’s certainly a difference you can taste.

True Nutrition Whey Flavor #2 – Strawberry Cheesecake

I bought the TrueNutrition.com 38 Flavor sample pack.

Strawberry Cheesecake.

Tastes like the name says, tho being a cheesecake lover, I expected a little more “cheesecake” flavor. Didn’t thrill me as much as the Strawberries and Cream, and the aftertaste wasn’t as nice in my mouth. Not offensive or anything, I’d drink this again for sure. But for MY tastes, not as good as Strawberries and Cream.

True Nutrition Whey Flavor #1 – Strawberries and Cream

I bought the TrueNutrition.com 38 Flavor sample pack.

Strawberries and Cream.

Tastes like the name says. I liked it. A little weird to see this white powder turn pink when you mix it (I used milk), but the taste was fine. Strawberry-y and creamy. Nothing too bad.
