Black Sabbath – “Planet Caravan”
And a little background as to where the song came from. Quite cool.

Daughter has been taking drum set lessons for a month now. Yes, we bought an acoustic set (a used Pearl Export 5-piece, older model pre-ISS mounts), no I don’t mind the noise. Actually, I really enjoy listening to her.
I like her teacher because he works not just on fundamentals but also making things fun. There’s a lot to be said for that. Skills are important to develop, but moreso is the love of music.
She’s at a point now where she’s getting some more fundamentals but also some basics of how to get around the set, like the last lesson she started doing some basic fills, mostly just a drill to help her work through the toms and then back into the main beat. Her teacher showed her basic rock beats, but then how to change them up and vary them, especially with bass drum patterns.
So what’s cool isn’t just listening to her practice those things, but starting to experiment and do other things. To just explore. I can tell she’s feeling more comfortable and confident behind the set. I certainly encourage her to just free-form it, experiment, explore, because that’s from where things grow — especially the love of playing.
Down – “Stone the Crow”
Rolling Stone had a slideshow on the 10 Worst Songs from the 1980’s. Coming in at #4, Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go”.
There was a blurb in the article that stood out to me:
What’s with the “Choose Life” shirts in the video? I always thought it was a pro-life message, but it turns out the shirt’s designer is pro-choice and it relates to respecting life by shunning violence and war.
If you choose life, wouldn’t that mean you’d also want to choose to respect the life of that yet-to-be-born baby?
Kyuss – “Green Machine”
Sleep – “Druid”
I just picked up the new Opeth album, “Heritage”.
It’s Opeth, but it’s not.
For fans of their death metal heritage well… it’s certainly not “Morningrise”. It’s not “Damnation” either, tho I can see people drawing immediate parallels since “Heritage” is kinda on the mellow side. But it’s not even “Watershed”, yet it seems to just be an evolution of where Opeth has been going with their later albums. There’s no question it’s still Opeth in terms of composition, song structure, lyrical content, and so on. It is Opeth… but unlike anything they’ve done before.
It’s more “progressive”. It’s more jazzy. “Famine” made me think of Jethro Tull (guess why?). Still has that “spooky” overtone to everything. No death growl vocals (tho I honestly don’t blame Mike for that… the longevity of my throat would appreciate it too). In fact, if you look at the setlists for the tour going on right now, it’s rather a mellow overall set… like maybe I should be sitting at a small round table with a cigar and cognac while I listen, but certainly no mosh pit here.
Like all Opeth albums, I’ll need to listen to it numerous times before I can really form my opinion. This is just first listen reaction. I do dig it, and while it feels so familiar, it feels so different. Just have to keep listening to see where I end up placing it.
