Survey says…

Austin Police Department released some crime figures for the SXSW festival:

City wide:

149 arrested for driving while intoxicated
96 arrested for public intoxication
28 arrested for aggravated assault
309 arrested for theft

Downtown:

22 arrested for driving while intoxicated
45 arrested for public intoxication
4 arrested for aggravated assault
66 arrested for theft

As soon as I read that, what came to mind was John Farnam’s saying about staying safe and managing risk in life:

Don’t go to stupid places; don’t associate with stupid people; don’t do stupid things. We will add to that, be in bed by 10 o’clock.

SXSW fails on all 4 counts. 🙂

  1. While I understand we comparing an ‘apple/oranges’ a little here — but in 2012, there were 120 CONVICTIONS of CHL holders in the entire year. In 2011, 120. In 2010, 121. In 2009, 101 — In 4 years, CHL holders across the state were still more law abiding the the attendees of the festival in 1 week.

It would take 75% of the arrests to be dismissed or thrown out to equal all the convictions for a single year. I simply can not understand how ‘firearms’ are the issue. Some people will behave, some won’t. Been that way for ever and for the likely future.

    • It is an apples to oranges comparison, but it’s still a worthy point for folks to consider. Shame many won’t.
