Anywhere is possible

“I saw him, and I heard the gun shots. My first thought was, ‘God, this is not real, not on our campus, not here,’” sophomore Tanisha Bush said.

Yes. It can happen there, on your campus. It can happen anywhere. Evil knows no bounds.

  1. Yes, it can happen anywhere. I was standing in my office on campus when I got the news from my office mate who had heard it over the Capital Metro radio on his way to school.

My plan of action was simple, a shooter on campus? Potentially moving? I did exactly what I needed to do, not knowing where the shooter was, I immediately notified the main office who were already in action keeping students locked in rooms, securing the exterior doors and notifying instructors. My plan was simple, I moved all of my office mates and shared office mates, along with anyone I could find in the hall, into my office, secured the exterior door to the office suite, moved everyone to the back office, and was able to shut two more doors between us and the hallway (all of them automatic locking doors).

At that point we had contact with the main office, internet and phone access as well as three doors and three walls (two cinder block), between us and any potential threat. We were also in a room that didn’t have windows exposed to the inside of the building and exterior windows that were three floors up.

A PLAN and preparation made everything move smoothly and I was glad I had thought about it before. Next week, we will have a big safety briefing and start assigning new jobs for people in the building. Once it became clear that the initial problem was contained and our building was safe as long as the exterior doors were locked down, we exited the office and started working to maintain the safety of the undergraduate students within our building.

It can happen anywhere, everywhere. It happened, yesterday, less than 1000 feet from my office, I had a plan, it went smoothly, it was not a drill. Fortunately, no one was ever in serious danger, but I have to tell you, that plan sure helped me sleep soundly last night.

    • That’s the key thing: having a plan.

That means, figuring it out BEFORE it happens, so when it does happen, you just execute… you don’t sit there trying to figure out what to do. You already know what to do, so you just do it.

      Good job.
