The ammunition brought to market is interesting because it brings 100-200 fps more but still within SAAMI pressure specs. TFB has some hard data and graphs.
So what I wonder is…
Barnes Bullets like velocity. Generally speaking, the faster you can push ’em, the more performance you’ll get out of them. So if these new powders can get 100-200 fps more, what tangible gains could we see in driving those Barnes bullets?
Now, the 6.8 SPC was designed to be used out of rifles with shorter barrels (e.g. 14.5″, 16″, even Bill Wilson typically uses an 11″ to take feral hogs). These powders are about efficient burn:
They achieve this by developing a set of new powders and blending these powders specifically for each cartridge so that all the powders burns completely inside the barrel. This allows maximum power transferred to the cartridge but also lower muzzle blast, thereby reducing recoil.
So these powders in short-barreled rifles… could use of these powders “negate” the velocity loss you see by taking a couple of inches off your barrel?
Then, Barnes Bullets that like velocity, easier to handle SBR’s, powder that gives you more velocity (and less muzzle blast and less recoil and more efficient burn) well…. could this be a fantastic combination?
I’m really curious.
Well, they are using proprietary blended powders in those loads.. I would sure love to get my hands on it..
It’s all about the burn rate, length of barrel and bullet weight..
Be cool to watch it’s development
I know the marketing manager for Hornady, so, I hope to get some when available
If they would offer a 100G GMX 6.8 bullet and that powder in a factory load that would be awesome!
That could be cool. But the key part here is that they’re going to make those powders available to the general public!
So…. what could WE do with those powders? That’s what I’m curious about.
For the 95gr TTSX, RL-10x seems to be the go-to powder. I can get over 2900fps with the 95gr TTSX and RL-10x (forgot the exact load but it was ~29.5gr of powder, loaded to 2.255″) out of a 20″ Bison Armory barrel, and the round shoots 3/4″ moa. This seems consistent with what others are getting on 68forums.com; in fact my particular barrel is probably a little “slow,” for most loads, people seem to get the same velocities I get with shorter barrels. I doubt you could get much better than that with these powders.
That’s the word…. RL-10x or maybe H322.
BUT…. that’s why I’m really curious about these new powders. Could they deliver 100-200 fps more for these 6.8’s? and couple that with the TTSX’s… and could that wind up becoming THE go-to combination?
Don’t know… have to wait until 2011 when they release the powders for the public to use. But boy, it’d be curious to know.
