D GFOY EWZN YVN YVN

I was at the Texas Memorial Museum (also known as the Texas Natural Science Center) and there was a display case.

Inside the display case, as if someone just slipped it in (easter egg? inside joke?), was a little card that had this upon it:

D GFOY EWZN YVN YVN
OLNANQP WA YVN
YVDQS TEWWQ.

I’m pretty sure that’s an encoded message, but I have no idea what it is and I’m not a cryptographer.

Anyone know?

    • Yes it does! It makes perfect sense!! Not sure why there are 2 “the” on the first line, but oh well.

The sign is in a showcase on the 3rd floor. So yeah, it’s funny!

If I may ask, how did you decipher it? A cryptographer I am not.

  1. It doesn’t mean anything to me, but I sometimes work for the museum and I will ask around.

    • BTW: TMM in addition to the collections of NPL (Non-Vertebrate Paleontology Laboratory), VPL (Vertebrate Paleontology Laboratory), TNHC (Texas Natural History Collect, a collection of herps. and fish), make up the whole of the Texas Natural Science Center.

We have a fascinating series of collections and material from the world over and it is great fun to be part of the research scientists that helps build, maintain, and study the collection.

    • Oh cool. What I really want to know is… what’s the story behind the card? Who’s made the joke? Where did it come from? I want to know back story. 🙂

      • What else is there about the display? Is the display a certain thing that the card is with?

I have a sneaking suspicion that I may know who is responsible for cryptographed notes in the museum.

        • It’s up on the 3rd floor… it’s a display with lots of jars of preserved specimens, up by the elevator. If memory serves….

The card is just slipped into the case… just randomly there.

          • Were those jars full of lizards, snakes, and maybe amphibians of sorts?

That narrows the list of suspects dramatically, I will inquire when I see my main suspect today.

  2. and are there other codes in the museum?

As for solving it (assuming that’s the solution), there’s a few decent deciphering tools around the web. I took a crack at it then gave up and “cheated”. of the list of candidate phrases this seemed most likely.
