You’re doing it wrong

I’ve got three kids. One of the worst things I can imagine for myself would be losing one, especially if that loss could have been prevented.

But forcing everyone to donate their organs because your child needed organ transplants and almost died? Wrong.

So the way to play is, I want my way. If I can’t have my way, I’ll get a law passed so I get my way. To hell if it tramples on the rights and freedoms of everyone else. And it just so happens I’m a legislator, so I’ll abuse the authority given to me by the people.

Wrong.

I think organ donation is A Good Thing™. I myself am a blood donor (and trying to get back to being more regular about it). That’s not what I have a problem with. Look folks… if people don’t like “opt out” policies for something as menial as websites signing us up for their mailing lists, do you really think we’re going to like “opt out” policies for something like our organs?

  1. Or we could decriminalize selling organs. I’ve got two great kidneys, but I’d part with one right now for the right money. Too bad for Little Suzie though, she’s not allowed to fork over some cash for what she needs.

  2. Consider the next step when this doesn’t solve the problem.

Will they try to pass a law requiring mandatory organ donation if you are a match?

Our records indicate you have have two kidneys and little Suzy needs one — since you benefit from governmental programs, you are now required to report to the hospital on NoWayInHell 5th for to be a donor.
    Thank you

If they can take from our dead bodies, why not our live ones eh?

    • People laugh at the notion of the slippery slope. Little do they realize they only need to look up to see how far we’ve already slid down it.

    • It wouldn’t start with regular citizens, but with criminals. “He’s on death row. Why not use him for spare parts instead of putting him in the chair.”

This is a theme that has been extensively explored in Niven’s works such as “A Gift From Earth”

The Organ Banks, which are used to keep citizens alive for a long long time, are filled by the organs of condemned criminals. As demand for organs increases the supply is increased by criminalizing more and more behavior.

Well, that’s what they’re attempting to do now. What did I say above about that slippery slope?
