I’ve got a big itch to go hunting.
Yes, turkey season starts today but I have little desire to hunt turkey. Thought about it but meh… just not really interested.
But… I just had my lunch, was flipping channels while I ate, and caught the tail end of that “Hogzilla” “documentary”.
Made me want to go hog hunting. I need some pork in the freezer.
But I also thought about my desire to use a .223 for hunting hogs. I think normal sized hogs should be fine with good ammo. But Hogzilla? Well… I’ll want to bring along something bigger. 🙂 Let the kids use the .223, and if it needs it, something 30-caliber would be good.

No, hadn’t seen that one.
Hrm.
That bugs me to hear about the Federal P223S. I wonder why. Could it be too light a bullet? Could it be the complete pass-through that you typically get from the Barnes bullets was a problem? My guess, too light and didn’t do enough, because I know Bill Wilson (Wilson Combat) takes some monster hogs with other Barnes bullets.
Makes me wonder if the 62 grain Barnes TSX would be better.
Or of course… this is just making my 6.8 SPC lust increase.
Hogs are harder to kill than deer, and around here a .223 isn’t legal for deer.
No question hogs are tougher than deer. Here in Texas .223 is legal for deer. I know the debate rages about this, but there’ve been enough folks that have done it repeatedly…. and of course, there are those that take cannons out and the deer just laugh back at them.
Again, my desire for 6.8 increases.
All of our deer are mulies, and the smallest allowed for them is a .243. The 223 doesn’t have enough weight to allow good penetration on large game. A head shot would work, but just about anything works with a head shot. My great grandad never used anything larger than a .22LR for deer (this was back before a lot of the present laws were passed).
That’s the thing…. more deer been taken with a .22 LR than anything else. But laws came along.
Frankly, a lot comes down to your ability… and willingness to sometimes let the deer go if it won’t be a good shot/kill.
But meantime… I look towards 6.8 SPC.
