There’s an article at LowTechCombat that had a few random fitness things I wanted to keep around.
Talks about running barefoot. I walk around barefoot as much as possible and have tried running barefoot only to have everything from the knee down hate me after a short while. This may be a better way to get started.
A discussion of milk. I have noticed that I don’t consume milk that much in my adult life. I’ll have some with a bowl of cereal and I do love ice cream, but that’s about it. One issue not addressed in the article is the consumption of cow milk. Cows have a more intensive digestive system than we humans do, thus it stands to reason cow milk is oriented towards… well… cows. I’ve been told that humans can bode better with simpler milks, such as goat milk. Of course, I’ve tried goat milk and I can’t stand it.
Crossfit intrigues me. I like their 100-word description of world-class fitness:
Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.
The meat of the cow wasn’t designed or oriented to your nutritional needs either. It’s the other way around. You are built as an omnivore and can digest things like cow milk, cow meat, plus the twigs and berries that are good for you.
Lactose Tolerance and Human Evolution
or just in case this doesn’t allow links:

As recently as 10,000 years ago you couldn’t drink cow’s milk because everyone was lactose intolerant. There was a beneficial mutation (evolution) then that has allowed us to handle milk. After another 10,000 years of McDonalds, maybe we’ll adapt to be able to digest that stuff too!
Huh. Interesting. I had wondered about that (the lactase enzyme) because I know kids tend to be able to handle milk better than adults. And adults I know that always kept a steady stream of milk in their diets are fine whereas those that “weened” off diary have the problems. I know I can handle milk better than my wife… all this damn ice cream. 🙂
Glad you liked the post!
From what I have read from Mark Sisson and Chris from Conditioning Research blog and others is that Goats milk is better for humans to consume than cows milk. A good indicator of this is that many people have trouble with cows milk and far fewer have issues with goats milk.
And Peter, I dread the day when we as humans eat so much crap fast food that we “evolve” to be able to handle it with few health effects… 😉
On the cow vs. goat thing, it makes some sense. Goat’s have one stomach, like us. Cows have 4 (well, not really… but they do have more digestive compartments). Goat milk is simpler to break down. But of course, you have to be able to deal with goat milk… strong stuff. 🙂
