Ugh

Of course after I order a can of Trail Boss I learn that you shouldn’t use Trail Boss with anything other than pure lead bullets (no jacketed, no plated). I can’t find the official statement from IMR/Hodgdon but it is implied in their Trail Boss description and some things I found online reinforce that Trail Boss should not be used with any sort of jacketed/plated bullet: all lead only.

I wanted it for .38 Special loads, but the only bullets I have right now are Berry’s plated. I guess I’ll have to pick up some cast semi wad cutters from The Bulletworks. I got to meet Jimmy Mitchell last year at a KR Training class. Great guy.

  1. You should try Bear Creek moly coated lead bullets. Im pretty certain trail boss will work well with them. Its the best of both worlds if you ask me: only a little more expensive than naked lead and a lot cheaper than jacketed or plated, but no lead fouling. I’ve been shooting these for quite some time in both 9mm and 45acp, and they work well with even very hot powders like Titegroup. They do smoke a little, but nowhere near as much as naked lead. I actually use a load somewhere between the recommended cast load and the recommended jacketed load for these, but thats with Titegroup and Promo, not sure what kind of performance Trail Boss will give.

    • Never tried moly bullets. Isn’t there some thing about once you shoot moly bullets you need to stick to moly bullets in that gun? Don’t know much about ’em.

The Trail Boss will be interesting to experiment with. But given the bullet requirement, it’s going to sit on the shelf to wait.
