This exercise is only safe if you aren’t using a firearm. An “unloaded” firearm remains a firearm. If we are confident that this drill is safe then why not use your kids as “dry fire” targets? We balk at that idea, but feel ok about dropping the hammer on a piece of cardboard in front of a window? There are other safer ways to run a stage dry and integrate weapons manipulation.
That being said, I make no claim to be a IPSC grandmaster, but I see this as being unsafe.
I certainly understand where you’re coming from and you raise a worthwhile point.
I’ve had discussion with people about this. Why use a backstop for your dry fire if you know your gun is unloaded? Because if all guns are always loaded, Col. Cooper, then how can we ever dry fire??
Could you have a specially modified gun that had all the proper mechanisms but couldn’t actually fire, thus you could dry fire but couldn’t fire? Or maybe you’re using Airsoft? (it’s your house, damage it as you wish).
Some people have different comfort levels…. some feel OK with this because they take all the precautions they can. Maybe Mr. Re lives in a remote enough area where if one did fly it’d just cost him some rennovation/repair costs.
Everyone has to evaluate their situation, do what they feel comfortable with, and remember that anything that lets fly they are responsible for 100%.
Universal Firearms Handling Rules?
