Read on for part 3.
So I see yesterday that finally the updated iPhone app came out. I didn’t download it yet as I wanted to get the desktop application down first and get things set up and going.
Took care of getting my Google Reader account set up, downloaded and launched the new version of NetNewsWire, and it was pretty easy to get set up and going. I’ll say they made the transition work smoothly… but it seems part of that only came because of the uproar caused by their previous stumbles as well as their resulting delay of the transition because they fumbled so badly.
Now their NewsGator sync service is set to shut off on September 28. Wow, they’re still not giving people a lot of time to get transitioned over, since the iPhone app just came out.
Nevertheless, here we are.
So far so good. I’ll probably stick with the free (ad-supported) versions for now. Let’s wait and see if everything is good and stable before I fork over a chunk of money.
I did notice that keeping up with news feeds seems faster. I was noticing some sites might take a full 24 hours before the RSS feed would update, but now those same sites are updating much faster (thank you Google). Of course, I expected some resetting of things, like right now every site I RSS subscribe to now has unread messages. But I did notice, everyone topped out at 10 messages. That I don’t like, but I hope that might just be an initial setting. I liked how the old NewsGator syncing would track however many articles you didn’t read… so if you ignored some site for a few days and unreads got into the hundreds, it would keep track of all of that. I liked that, I hope that will remain. I’m sure I’ll see as the day goes on.
Anyway, so far so good. I’m glad NewsGator recognized they weren’t ready to roll and delayed things and worked to get things in order. I’m still not convinced things are 100% and that due to their rush things aren’t going to fall through the cracks. But so far, so good.
