Birdshot is for birds

Birdshot is for birds, not for self-defense.

Via Joe we have a story of a guy getting shot in the chest with what is believed to be birdshot. The guy chases the shooter for a bit, then decides he needs to stop and get himself to the hospital. If he can get shot in the chest (likely at close range given the nature of the story), run for a while, then make the conscious decision to get himself to the hospital… I think the only thing the birdshot was effective at was giving him a medical bill and a bad evening (and couple weeks while he heals up).

Buckshot. Buckshot. Buckshot. I just don’t understand why people continue to promote birdshot for anything other than shooting birds.

  1. Birdshot is great, for busting clays and practice. It’s pretty lousy for busting bad guys.

Buckshot is for big things like people and BUCKS. Birdshot is for little thing like clays, rabbits, and squirrels. Remember folks, 00 for 12-gauge, #3 for 20-gauge.

    • Some also say #1 buck for 12 gauge. The data on #1 is rather persuasive, but the fact it’s hard to find #1 in stores is a big negative.

  2. I haven’t really seen a comparison of #1 versus 0, 00, and 000. Personally, I always thought that bigger is better applied when it came to buckshot, but I could be wrong.

I would run the #2 that is available in 20-gauge, but I don’t run an extended mag tube, so running 3″ #2s would reduce me to a 3+1 capacity instead of 4+1. Not too mention that the 2 3/4″ #3 buck loads have enough recoil, thank you very much.
