Combined Skills

Next weekend (Sep. 12 & 13, 2009) KR Training will be holding a special Combined Skills course.

Students will work with Tom [Givens, of Rangemaster] on pistol skills for real fights. Southnarc will cover Managing Unknown Contacts, Practical Unarmed Combat, and In-Fight Weapon Access. This is a unique opportunity to obtain dove-tailed training in integrated pre-fight management skills, empty hand skills, and street proven gun skills.

Topics: group shooting at 7-25 yards, presentation from holstered and ready positions, multiple shots/single target, multiple targets, targets at varying ranges, one handed shooting (left and right hand), reloads, shooting on the move, shooting from kneeling and prone, shooting from cover, drawing and shooting from seated positions, and more.

This is some serious training, covering a lot of skills by two of the nation’s best instructors in their respective fields. It is not a beginner course, and looks to be rather intensive. I expect it will be educational, stressful, and humbling.. and you’ll probably go home hurting a bit. 🙂

Opportunities like this don’t come around often. If you’re within reasonable travel distance to Central Texas and the KR Training facilities, I’d recommend signing up for the course. There are still some slots left.

I’ll be there. I expect to be humbled and educated, and come out a better person for it all. It’ll be long and tiring, but should be good. I’m sure I’ll have reports afterwards.

  1. That looks like an awesome course. I’ve enjoyed Southnarc’s work for a number of years. I only wish I’d known about this sooner. Unfortunately, I need a minimum of 14 days to request off of work, what a damn shame.

    • Request now! See if you can get it off… or make a deal with a co-worker to trade work days or you’ll take 2 of his days for 1 of yours or something.

There’s got to be a way!

  2. I would love to so much, but I have to work. We just forked over $700 from meager savings for a cat. Poor guy had a badly infected tooth that required me to pony up gun, beer, and ammo money to get him taken care of. It’s worth it of course.

However, I do think I will try and take the Low Light AT course in October. That one is well within my budget and I only need acquire a couple of more magazines to make it a no problem kind of event. I’ve only done a minor bit of low light work and I think it’ll be an eye opening experience.

    • I do understand that. I spend much money on animals myself.

I’ve taken the low-light course. It’s certainly an eye-opener and a lot of fun. If you can, see if you can make a bit of a day and take the Defensive Pistol 2 class before that… tho, I think Defensive Pistol 1 is a prerequisite… but the official word on the website leaves some wiggle-room so you’d have to talk with Karl.

  3. I just sent registration for AT1 lowlight. I believe their pre-req of DP1, will be satisfied by my Thunder Ranch Tactical Handgun training. I will wait to hear from them, but I do hope I can take the class, it looks like fun.

    • Never had a not-fun class there.

Hopefully you’ll be able to take the DPS2 class. I was thinking about coming out that day to assist with teaching those classes since it’ll be a long day. I’ll probably see you out there then. 🙂

  4. I’m a little worried the class is going to be the proverbial 10 lbs of stuff in a 5 lb bag.

I don’t mean that it will be bad, just I think it may be too much to absorb in one weekend. Hopefully I’m wrong about that …

    • I’m expecting it will be just that. The InSights weekend was loaded with information. I don’t know if they’ll have any handouts, but I’d recommend bringing a notebook and pen. In fact, I might also bring a small flip pad that can fit in my back pocket so if we’re out on the range and they go over things I can jot a quick note to myself.

It will be a lot of information, it will be chock full. But taking notes ought to help.
