Martial arts cane videos

In light of my cane making, this morning I found myself going around YouTube in search of cane videos. Man, I remember when I used to search for martial arts videos and would find nothing. Now there’s just too much to list. 8)  From my searching, I wanted to highlight some of what I found.

Kuk Sool Cane Demonstration

I’m not sure who that is demonstrating, but he’s high level (9th degree). While a little “demo-y” and showy, it’s still demonstrative of the cane techniques taught in Kuk Sool.

Master Byung In Lee 9th Degree Promotion Demo

This is (now) 9th Degree Black Belt Master Byung In Lee (who’s school is here in Austin), highlights from his 9th degree promotion. Not a cane demo per se, tho it does have highlights from his cane techniques. I just like this video, especially the fan techniques at 0:40… the first guy gets nailed hard.

Basic Hapkido Cane Techniques

This is a Hapkido black belt demonstrating basic cane techniques. What I like about this video is the slow movements, which makes it easier to view the technique. I also like that he makes no bones about the fact he’s just been taught these techniques, so there’s no pretense of being some “master” of anything. Just a student, learning.

Seicho Jutsu Cane Hanbo

A different approach to cane, and shows a straight cane instead of a crooked one. I do like the different techniques demonstrated here, especially the use of strikes.

Hapkido Master Cane Demo

This video is a little over the top demo-y for my tastes, but it’s still a good video. Many times cane demonstrations focus on locking and throwing, and while that’s present there’s a good deal of other things demonstrated too. For instance, there’s extensive use of blocking, striking (including some very simple strikes, like the cane-butt strike to start the 4th technique), and even using the cane as a clearing device at the start of the last technique.

Old Guys Having Fun

Two older gentlemen with different approaches to cane, but working together and just having a lot of fun. I appreciate their simple approach to things, especially the last thing you see: the butt-end strike to the chest. A lot of other simple blocking and striking techniques.

Bagua Cane

Yet another approach to cane, based upon Baguazhang. Note the extensive use of striking and blocking and almost no other techniques.

Combat Hapkido Cane

Just a small clip from one of their videos. I just liked the bed music contrasted with the visual content. 🙂

Alain Burrese on cane

This is a video series that I’ve wanted to check out for some time. Alain is a Hapkido guy and has worked to translate his knowledge into more street-smart techniques, including a bit of eclecticism if that’s useful. This video has been well-received and certainly is on my list to check out.

Just from this small sampling of cane videos, you can see there are different approaches to the use of a cane as a weapon. Striking, blocking, locking, trapping, throwing. Some simple movements, some complex movements. Attacking in close, attacking at a distance. Straight canes, crooked canes. The cane is a versatile weapon
