Ending the rumor

There’s been word spreading around the gun community about gun thefts by putting red dots on tires of cars at shooting-related events (e.g. at the range), then thieves tracking and later breaking into the car to steal the firearms.

When I first heard the rumor, I was curious because it was reportedly happening nearby (San Antonio), but skeptical. I figured we could look into it tho to see if there was any credibility to it. I mean, if the local sheriff met with folks, certainly that’d be on record wouldn’t it? Certainly there’d be hundreds of people who listened to the sheriff that could back this up, right?

Alas, we found nothing.

Finally, a credible response, dispelling the rumor.

I figure tho like most rumors spreading on the Internet, this one is going to continue to float around for many many years. Please work to help dispel it.

  1. I spoke with a SWAT officer at the match today who said it was true but that could just be cops spreading rumors.

    • Well, we can say that the rumored location/match of the thefts has said “no, didn’t happen here”.

I do think we still need to be mindful about theft from cars as that can and does still happen. Plus, I would say it’d be good to be aware of your vehicle! You should know what looks right, what doesn’t look right, walk around your vehicle and inspect it once in a while.. we shouldn’t take our cars for granted anyways because they’re machines and need some maintenance and love like anything else. If you know you don’t have red dots then see one after parking somewhere (especially somewhere gun related), that might be a more credible sign.

      • He claimed some gang members were debriefed and discloused the information but again it didn’t happen in his department so yeah.
