Bend the bar, pull the bar, and other clarity

Finally, someone that provides a clear enough explanation such that I can understand it. 🙂

When bench pressing, I read a lot of recommendations to “bend the bar” or “pull it apart”. Depending how you read it and how it’s described, and depending what cues you may be focusing on, you could read it numerous ways.

At first, I thought it meant to pull it apart, like taffy. Like you wanted to stretch the bar to make it longer. But then I was reading something else and really working to focus on keeping my elbows tucked (i.e. arms closer to my body, forming a small/acute angle from the side of my body through my armpit to the inside of my upper arm; vs. elbows pointing out sideways making a larger angle, almost a right angle). A description I read said to bend the bar, and between that and the tuck advice, I got the impression more of bending the bar as if I was trying to bend it in half and turn it into a U-shape.

But Brandon Lillly just gave some clearer advice:

If the bar slows down, squeeze the bar harder and start pulling the bar “apart” as if you were trying to stretch it, and that will keep your triceps engaged and pressing.

So the “squeeze” is with your hands, your grip itself. And then yes, it’s a taffy-pull. I was right the first time. And frankly, that makes a lot more sense in terms of keeping the triceps engaged.

Brandon’s article contained some other good things:

When setting up, find a foot position that allows your knee joint to fall in line lower than your hip joint. This will maximize leg drive, and prevent your butt from elevating off the bench resulting in a disqualified lift.

I’ve been fiddling with my foot position, and this gives a very precise method for finding where to place your foot. I’ll experiment with this.

Anyways, read the whole article. Some good basic tips.

KR Training March 2013 Newsletter

I’m a little behind in posting about the KR Training March 2013 Newsletter.

Schedule through the end of summer is posted, and I’ll say this… if you are contemplating taking a class, sign up now. Literally, now.

The current climate has had much impact upon things. Classes are filling up at an unpredicented rate. What classes are being offered is being greatly driven by demand; it normally is, of course, but not like this. It shows what’s on everyone’s mind. I’m not suggesting “sign up now” out of “fear drive”, but rather, reality of scheduling. For example, the April 20 classes weren’t full when I looked a couple days ago, but writing this post this morning, now they’re full. Truly, it’s just high demand for limited slots, so if you want to get one, you can’t dawdle.

The realities of the present climate have also had some other impacts.

NRA Instructor courses are being offered this summer (usually a January thing).

Numerous classes have had round-count adjustments. For example, there’s a new Defensive Long Gun – Essentials that’s a modified version of the regular DLG class, but since shotgun ammo is highly available, the class will be a little more shotgun-centric. We also had to raise the price of Basic Pistol 1 to help cover the rising cost of ammo.

Of course, just being summertime, other adjustments were made as well — such as starting classes at 8 AM. Please be sure to arrive before class starts so we can start on time. 🙂

Oh… and apparently now I’m lead instructor on some classes. Whee!

Music you don’t want to hear at the gym

Music you don’t want to hear at the gym: .38 Special’s “Hold on Loosely”

Yesterday when I arrived at the gym, the radio was on the local rock station — someone left it off from last night. No way to turn it off, so I deadlifted with it playing.

This song came on prior to my heavy sets.

When you’re deadlifting, the last thing you want to hear is a cue of “hold on loosely”. 🙂

Wendler 5/3/1 program, cycle 18, week 1

  • Work Set – Deadlift (working max: 375#)
    • 1x5x150 (warmup)
    • 1x5x190
    • 1x3x230
    • 1x5x245(work)
    • 1x5x285
    • 1x7x325
  • Assistance – Deadlifts
    • 5 x 5 x 185
  • Assistance – Pulldown Abs (kneeling)
    • 4 x 15 x 100

Today worked pretty well. I know 7 reps isn’t tons higher than the prescribed 5, but it’s an increase at 325. All good.

When I was doing assistance lifts, I opted to work on where I was breaking. I sometimes lift my butt before the weight comes off the ground, which isn’t good. So I wanted to really focus on breaking at the knees, getting the weight off the ground, then I could straighten up.

Otherwise, working good.

Pretty Swirls

At the end of a recent DPS1 class, we were doing the extreme-close-quarters drill. As I walked the line I noticed something different on one student’s target.

You’ll want to click on the picture to embiggen it and see the detail.

He said he was shooing Blazer (I guess Blazer Brass). And at that “contact distance”, the bullet was spinning (hooray rifling!), thus the air around was being spun, all the unburnt powder was coming out… and there you go.

Pretty nifty looking, eh?

Felt better today

Wendler 5/3/1 program, cycle 18, week 1

  • Work Set – Bench Press (working max: 235#)
    • 2x5x45 (warmup)
    • 1x5x95
    • 1x5x120
    • 1x3x145
    • 1x5x155 (work)
    • 1x5x180
    • 1x8x200
  • Assistance – Bench Press
    • 5 x 10/10/10/10/6 x 140
  • Assistance – Pendlay Rows
    • 5 x 10/10/10/8/8 x 120

Felt a lot better today. While I matched the same as last cycle (8×200), I did more total work between both work sets and assistance sets. Just the way the calculations and rounding of percentages worked out that I did 200 again. But more workload overall, my head was more into it. All good.

I also played more with my foot position. I started out doing what I thought, being a bit more “out” but my final work set was again that flopping around and no tension. So I tried pulling my legs back. My shins were just behind perpendicular; where if you drew a line from my knees to my toes, that would be perpendicular to the ground. I found myself greatly able to push up and push solidly. A little care needed to avoid my butt coming off the bench, but this might be a position to work with for a little while and see how it goes. I only did it on my assistance sets, and it seems I notice the problem more with heavier sets so… we’ll see.

Back in the gym, and I’m not happy.

Wendler 5/3/1 program, cycle 18, week 1

  • Work Set – Squat (working max: 295#)
    • 2x5x45 (warmup)
    • 1x5x120
    • 1x5x150
    • 1x3x180
    • 1x5x195 (work)
    • 1x5x225
    • 1x5x255
  • Assistance – Squat
    • 5 x 10/10/8/6/6 x 150
  • Assistance – Leg Curls
    • 5 x 10 x 60
  • Foam Rolling

*sigh*

So I took all of last week off completely. I even found myself slacking a little bit and falling back into bad habits. *sigh* Stress in life is wearing on me. I didn’t return to the gym yesterday due to daylight saving time — body said it was time to go, clock said it was too late.

So back I am today, and it sucked. I kept my squat weight the same from last cycle, aiming for rep PR’s. Well if rep PR’s are the goal, I missed it bigtime. Last cycle I did week 1 255 for 7, only got 5 today. I know I was mentally off, but I think it was physical too.

During the assistance squatting, I really focused on pressing my head back into the bar, and realized with all the falling forward I was doing during the work sets… 1. it’s techinque (I am forgetting to press my head back), 2. it’s weakness in the lower back because my erectors were tuckered out before anything else…. they were really activated from all the head pressing.

So it was what it was. I’m not ready to totally chalk it up to other things… maybe just an off day. Just have to see how the cycle progresses.

American Politics

Of the American political system, I’ve often said that Republicans want to legislate morality, and use our money to do it; Democrats want to legislate compasion, and use our money to do it; Libertarians want to leave you alone, and you get to keep your money.

Jack Donovan took a different approach, pointing out their contradictions:

The two mainstream groups in American politics are made absurd by obvious internal contradictions.

The “Republicans” position themselves as advocates of small-town values, yet defend the big businesses most responsible for eroding the small business, family farm lifestyles that make those values possible.

How can you save small town values with big businesses?

The “Democrats” are called liberals, and position themselves as champions of personal freedom, yet offer absolutely no solutions that don’t somehow involve increased government regulation or oversight.

How can you increase personal freedom with big government?

Read the rest, it’s short.
